Understanding the Role of Biomechanical Factors in Joint Health

At Fitness Clinic, we understand that biomechanical factors play a significant role in the health of joints and that altered joint loading, associated with factors such as obesity, malalignment, trauma, or joint instability, is a critical risk factor for joint degeneration and subsequent arthritis. We also recognize that exercise and weight loss have been shown to promote beneficial effects for osteoarthritic joints which is at the centre of our specialised program.

From Creaks to Cracks: How the Musculoskeletal System Changes as We Age

It’s important to note that aging changes in the musculoskeletal system can contribute to the development of osteoarthritis when working in conjunction with other factors, both intrinsic (malalignment, stability) and extrinsic (genetics) to the joint [88]. Normal synovial joints can usually withstand repetitive loading during normal activities for a lifetime without developing osteoarthritis [26, 140]. However, when mechanical demand that exceeds the joints tolerance, this plays a significant role in the development of arthritis and progression of joint degeneration in all forms. This is where our program comes in. By providing exercises that are tailored to each individual’s needs and addressing every individuals biomechanical loading, history of injuries and genetic predispositions, we can help reduce the impact of an individual’s osteoarthritis on their function.

When Multiple Factors Collide – Understanding Correlated Factors and Their Impact

We recognize that malalignment, loss of meniscal tissue, cartilage defects, and joint instability all seem to be strongly correlated to osteoarthritis in one way or the other. Furthermore, there are many other etiologies that can cause osteoarthritis, some of which also induce pathophysiological changes to the articular cartilage, subchondral bone, and other joint tissues, such as obesity, high-impact sports or labor, and neuromuscular dysfunction. By keeping these factors in mind and designing our program accordingly, we aim to intercept earlier in the pathophysiological process of osteoarthritis and decrease the burden of osteoarthritis on society.
